Test and Review of a Delineascope Model 0 Projector Lens by Spencer Lens Co.

The next lens in this row of our blog posts to test and review is the one we removed from a Delineascope Model 0 Projector that was ostensibly made by Spencer Lens Co. in the U.S.A. sometime in the 1910s to 1930s when this projector was being produced. This is what the lens looked like when it was on the projector.

This lens comes without any markings on it, hence the word "ostensibly" above. As a result, we can't be sure about the origin of this lens and its specifications. However, it seems to have a 2-inch, or roughly 50mm focal length, and we took stills with it regardless, to see what the results look like.


Color Shots


As you can see, the bokeh can be very swirly, and it's especially visible in the 5th and 6th shots above. Bokeh coins are very soft and dreamy. Also, on account of the copious amounts of dust and even traces of fungus inside the lens, shots can be considerably sharp, and in some cases like the 1st, 2nd, and 8th shots above, the resulting haze magnificently blends colors and creates a unique bokeh.


Black-and-White Shots


What's noticeable above is the high level of contrast on account of the dust, fungus, and absence of any coatings on the elements. Like most of the time, we didn't retouch the shots, and barely elevated the contrast and exposure.


Flare



As expected, the direct sunlight works as a magnifier on the dust and fungus of the elements. On account of this, the beautiful arches and rare dispersion of light creates weird and otherworldly effects.
