Sony RX10 Mark V Test and Review
If you look at our previous blog posts, you'll be wondering how come we're posting a test and review for something so blatantly irrelevant to the world of vintage projection lenses of the interbellum or postbellum era. And my answer to that question is that it's not a bad idea to rate a state-of-the-art camera or lens once in a while to see how different the world of new technologies in lens manufacturing is in comparison to the 1920s and 30s; it reminds us of the extent of technological advancements, and how full of character vintage lenses can be with their flaws and primitive structures.
Anyway, to give you an idea about this camera, it has a 20.1 megapixel 1" CMOS sensor, a Vario-Sonnar T* Carl Zeiss lens with an insane zoom range of 24-600mm in 35mm equivalent, and can shoot 30fps of raw photos. Also, remember that this camera was introduced a week or two prior to the time of writing this post, and it was still under embargo. Still, we could get our hands on a demo RX10 Mark V and show it to every eager customer who visited Ace Photo in person.
The camera itself is very handy, and as you can see in the photos above, its lens extends way out of the barrel to reach the 600mm limit, and the f/2.4-4 makes this lens considerably fast. Of course, it's worthwhile to mention here that the lens has a focal length of 9.1-210mm in the standard scale, but considering that the camera has a one-inch sensor, the ratio almost triples. In other words, if you wanted to reach the zooming capability of this lens on a 35mm full-frame sensor, you would need a 600mm lens. Focusing is very smooth thanks to the AI, and even on the longest extension of the lens, notably fast. Although this series of cameras doesn't come with Sony's celebrated In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), the combination of in-lens Optical SteadyShot and Active Mode (electrical stabilization) keeps the frame noticeably steady even at 600mm. In addition, the bokeh is smooth, and colors are realistic. Flare
Last but not least, we decided to remain loyal to the habit of testing flares. As you can see below, the flare on this lens gets a spectrum of blue, green, and even purple that complies with the color of the coatings that Zeiss chose for this lens.
